This is written for stone statue restoration. This particular one I’m working on is made from concrete but this process will work on any stone.

This is what happens in the northeast in the winter when you don’t cover your statues.

Severe spalling (flaking)

In our opinion, nothing is too far gone to save, as you can see in the photo, especially when you can’t just go to the statue dealer and get a new one.

We started this project before we decided to do this BLOG, so one is already in the process of its restoration.

STEP 1 - Stabilization

Secure all loose material. We use thin super glue made by Starbond. Don’t listen to your local supply store or contractor that say scrap all loose material. Once this loose material is bonded back to the base material with super glue, it becomes as one.

Make sure you use latex gloves during this gluing process, it can be extremely messy.

You need to put glue in each crack until it runs out, or saturates the surrounding area.

Notice how loose some of the material is, yet the author is choosing to leave the material in place. This material is important because it also helps preserve the original shape and size.

After areas are glued, go over material with an accelerator compatible to the super glue. Spray over entire statue where you super glued. We use and aerosol spray.

Total glue cost with accelerator for the Two Statues was about $60.00 and took about 2 hours.
